You have an important assignment to complete and switch on the power button on your PC, the only thing you dont want to experience is a computer that refuses to boot. If you have faced such a situation then this blog is for you.
You cannot show one issue that is responsible for this issue, it could be something related to Power button not working properly and/or something more serious like ageing SMPS. These are the most occuring but there can be other issues like an overheating CPU, Graphic card, or some virus or spyware activity.
If you are in such a situation this blog would help you find the issue for this problem and steps to correct it. Below are most of the overlooked issues and solutions which should get your system back online.
First check if the Power Plug is connected to the power socket securly or not. A loose Socket can cause Rebooting, then observe the power switch and see if its stuck. If thats the case, you may need to use a sharp object like a paper clip or something similar to release the power button. If that doesnt help you can remove the CPU Side Panel to get the power button to release itself to the correct position.
If the above doesnt help in correcting your PC from rebooting, then switch off the power switch which would be at the back of the cpu next to the SMPS Fan. If your SMPS doesnt have a switch, then you need to remove the PC from the wall power socket.
Also make sure that you do this ASAP to minimise the damage that could be caused due to the power flucuations, which can damage the mother board, hard disk etc in the PC.
If its not a Power or SMPS related issue, next thing you need to check is your computer’s operating system and applications by ensuring that no virus or spyware have effected your PC. Your system can be infected with Virus and spyware when you download stuff from internet.
To clean the virus and spyware, you need to remove your hard disk and connect it in a friends computer and scan it. Ensure that your friends antivirus program is up-to date before connecting your hard disk in your friends computer. If not then the virus in your system might effect your friends computer also. Some Virus can wipe the entire data on your hard disk.
If your system is free from virus and spyware, you need to check your BIOS. BIOS (Basic Input Output System) is a small program written into ROM of your PC to initialize all the devices in your PC when you switch on your PC.
BIOS is stored in the ROM, and settings you make to the BIOS are stored using the power from a battery located on the mother board to save the settings. In some cases when the battery drains out, the settings might be lost or corrupted. So try to enter the BIOS by pressing Del or F2 keys and you would have an option for loading the Default Settings which should work fine.
But in most cases when the PC is rebooting you will not be able to access the BIOS Setup page. Then you need to physically reset the BIOS by removing the CPU side panel and finding the CMOS Clear jumper and changing the Jumper Position to the mentioned pins and switching on the system. Then switch off put the Jumper back to the original position and start the PC.You need your PC or mother board manual to perform the above steps and do it as a last option.
If the issue still persistes, you need to check your RAM. Open the side panel of your CPU and you can see 2 or 4 sockets with 1, 2, 3 or 4 RAM modules which look like long, narrow sticks. You can have an issue if any of the RAM modules are not inserted correctly into the sockets and/or if any one of the RAM Module is not working.
Try removing the RAM Modules and connecting them again. If you have more than one module check using one RAM Module at a time, by doing so you can find the faulty ram module.
After all the above steps, if the PC is still rebooting, the last things you need to look at is your SMPS, try to borrow an SMPS from a friends computer and check if everything works fine.

By check the software, i mean to install a Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware and do a complete scan. You can go to download.com and searh for AVG to download a free antivirus. Once the EXE is downloaded to your system you can double click to run it and follow the instructions.
Once install run the Live update to get the latest definitions and then run a complete scan.
For Antispyware you can download and install Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy.
If you need any further clarification please get back to me.
